Stijn Schaars formed a great midfield partnership with Demy de Zeeuw when AZ won the Eredivisie in 2009. It was a sweet comeback for the 2006/2007 season, when AZ topped the Eredivisie before the final round but were caught by nerves in the last game against Excelsior.

The energetic midfielder, Schaars, took his first steps in professional football at Vitesse, which is known for its good youth academy. AZ recognised the potential of Schaars and signed the midfielder in the summer of 2005. Despite showing his potential, Schaars suffered from some serious injuries. He missed the crucial part of the spectacular 2006/2007 season and did not play a single game the season after.

Fully recovered from his injuries, Schaars returned in the AZ team last year. With their captain in the team again, AZ surprised the Netherlands by winning the Eredivisie. Former coach Louis van Gaal called Schaars ‘his best signing’ of the season.

Because of his injuries, Schaars failed to play for the Dutch national team between November 2006 and February 2009. The AZ man played in two World Cup qualifiers of the Netherlands and has collected 11 caps so far.

Did you know that:

Stijn Schaars had big difficulties with growing during his youth? He was not able to play football for an entire year and Vitesse had almost given up on the midfielder. It was Theo Bos, current head coach of Vitesse and at that time youth coach at the club, who kept faith in Schaars.
