Maarten Stekelenburg is a typical ‘Dutch’ goalkeeper, blessed with good football skills like Edwin van der Sar. Not a real coincidence: as a kid Stekelenburg started as an outfield player. One day the goalkeeper of his team was absent, so Stekelenburg tried to give it a shot with gloves on. It proved to be a very successful experiment.

Stekelenburg was always recognized as a talented goalkeeper, but he had to wait until the 2005/2006 season to become the real first at Ajax. Although not established at Ajax, Stekelenburg played his first game for the Netherlands in 2004; replacing Edwin van der Sar in a friendly against Liechtenstein.

While being first choice at Ajax, Stekelenburg was always the second man behind the legendary Van der Sar in the national team. After the shot stopper of Manchester United retired from international football, Stekelenburg took his place and remained the first choice of Bert van Marwijk, even when Ajax coach Marco van Basten opted for Kenneth Vermeer in the 2008/2009 season. With Martin Jol at the helm, Stekelenburg is back in town.

Did you know that:

Maarten Stekelenburg almost got to the Dutch Cup Final with the second team of Ajax in the 2001/2002 season? Only FC Utrecht were able to prevent a final between to Ajax teams.
