Jason Culina, Gold Coast United v Central Coast Mariners
A veteran of European football after a highly successful spell in the Netherlands that saw him spend four years with giants PSV, Culina polarized opinion with his decision to cut short his continental career and return to Australia with A-League outfit Gold Coast United. He has since maintained a high level of performance and his place within the starting line-up of the national team.

Culina’s international star truly began to shine under Guus Hiddink, where alongside Vince Grella he formed a highly successful midfield partnership and earned a reputation as a highly economical and efficient player. Frequently lauded for performing a job that is less obvious than that of some of his more creative team-mates, Culina’s intelligent use of possession, space and movement off the ball means that he is essential to any chance the Socceroos have of playing something resembling flowing football.

It is a testament to the level of his performances on the international stage in recent years that despite a controversial return to Australia, he remains so highly regarded by Pim Verbeek.
