After an initial failed attempt to break into European football in Croatia, Jedinak returned to Australia just in time to secure for himself an A-League contract in the embryonic stages of the nation’s top flight. There he impressed with the Central Coast Mariners before securing another chance on the continent, this time in Turkey, where he immediately adapted and caught the eye.

He has since emerged as a legitimate alternative to the frequently injured Vince Grella in one of two of Verbeek’s defensive midfield roles, the languid 25-year-old is not out of place on the few occasions on which he has been called into action for the Socceroos in recent times. He brings a conspicuous physical advantage and if he can replicate his sporadic goal-scoring feats at club level in the international arena, could be something of a secret weapon in South Africa.

Most importantly, what Jedinak boasts over virtually all of the other Aussies vying for a place at the base of midfield is consistent first team football this season in Europe, which should stand him in excellent stead physically and mentally heading into the World Cup.

Did You Know?

During his first stint in Europe with Croatian club NK Varteks, Jedinak played under legendary Croatin manager Miroslav Blazevic, who had guided the country to a third place finish at the 1998 World Cup.
