We wouldn't be doing our job if teams didn't want Bailey - Leverkusen

Rudi Voller has said that the attacker should not depart prematurely, despite reported interest from the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal

Bayer Leverkusen have indicated that they can keep hold of striking sensation Leon Bailey for as long as possible

The 20-year-old forward has attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal this January, but the Bundesliga club are hopeful that the Jamaica-born player, who has a contract until 2022, will elected to commit his future to them.

Bailey has scored nine times in 18 outings this season and made headlines at the weekend as he scored spectacularly against Hoffenheim.

“Leon loves this team and he needs his team-mates. He gives it back and that makes him all the more valuable to us,” sporting director Rudi Voller told Bild

“We would be doing bad work if other clubs were not interested in our players. At Leverkusen, he has the possibility to play in a team which enables such goals as against Hoffenheim.”

He has been in Leverkusen for a year now, having arrived from Genk, and Voller, himself a World Cup-winning forward, is delighted with how the young attacker has progressed.

“We’re happy with his development,” he said. “We had to sign him in the winter last year because of the threat of losing him to a competitor.

"We had a difficult situation back then, but we were convinced by him and were not afraid of the risk.”

Bayer head a logjam of teams on 31 points to sit second in the Bundesliga after 19 matches, though they trail league leaders Bayern Munich by a mammoth 16 points.
