The match officials attempted to restore order, after awarding Melbourne Victory a later winner, but tensions were running high.

City were frustrated to see an 86th minute own goal by Manny Muscat awarded, having initially been ruled out for an offside call.

Cahill make his feelings known to referee Chris Beath after being approached, with Besart Berisha considered to have been interfering with play, and was subsequently sent off without having stepped foot on the field.

The game ended 2-1 to Victory, compounding the misery of City’s 37-year-old veteran.
