Real Salt Lake signs American-born Wales international Henley

Real Salt Lake has announced the signing of former Blackburn Rovers fullback Adam Henley.

The 23-year-old joins RSL after spending six seasons with Blackburn, making 80 appearances combined in the Premier League and the Championship.

“I’m really excited to begin my journey at Real Salt Lake.  It’s a fantastic opportunity at a well-run, well-supported club,” Henley said in a team statement. “I feel this is a great chance for me to reignite my career and get back to playing my best football.”

Henley was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, before moving with his family to England at two years old. He has been capped twice by Wales, though both appearances came in friendlies, meaning he would still be eligible to file a one-time switch with FIFA to represent the United States.

“He is a promising young talent that has American roots. He has every reason to come over and work hard to be successful,” RSL general manager Craig Waibel said in a club release. “It’s a perfect scenario for us to bring in a young, energetic player that needs to prove himself.”

Henley had been a free agent since his contract with Blackburn expired in July.

He made his first appearance with the club as a 17-year-old back in 2011.
