Philadelphia shed light on Accam's acquisition

Philadelphia Union sporting director Earnie Stewart has shed light on their decision to bring David Accam to Talen Energy Stadium.

The Ghana international is the latest name on the books of The Union following a transfer from fellow Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire on Friday.

The 27-year-old was acquired as a designated player in exchange for a total of $1.2 million in allocation money.

"As we had said a while back, we’re trying to find some difference-makers for our team to help us over those humps in certain games that we had,” sporting director Earnie Stewart said.

“And being in games during most of the season but sometimes getting to that point where we can have that extra comfort in keeping that lead or keeping the tie on the board.

“We believe that a couple of difference-makers can help that.

“And once David Accam came around, it was really clear to us that that was a target that we wanted to make sure happened, and we as the Philadelphia Union made sure we stretched ourselves to make sure this player came aboard.

"Just very pleased that we were able to accomplish this.”

Accam netted 33 Major League Soccer goals during his time with Fire, registering 15 assists.

Aside from finishing his first two seasons as his club’s top scorer, he was also successively adjudged the club’s Most Valuable Player.

He joined the MSL from Swedish side Helsingborgs.
