Mexico will face Germany in the semifinal of the Confederations Cup after the reigning world champion topped Cameroon 3-1 Sunday to win Group B.
El Tri clinched passage into the group stage Saturday with a 2-1 victory against host Russia, finishing with seven points from three group matches. With Portugal ahead of the North Americans because of goal difference, Mexico moved into the knockout stage of the tournament as the second-placed team in Group A.
The stage looked set for a rematch of last season's Copa America Centenario quarterfinal against Chile, which El Tri lost 7-0 in the low point of coach Juan Carlos Osorio's tenure, but La Roja's draw with Australia means that match would have to wait until the final or third-place game.
On Sunday, Mexico went through a light training session before leaving Monday for Sochi.
The semifinal against Germany will take place in Sochi's Fisht Olympic Stadium at 2 p.m. ET with FS1 and Telemundo broadcasting the game in the United States.
