The striker is not planning to make any decision on his future before the end of the season, but Berbatov, who was at Monaco when Mbappe was in the club’s youth academy, feels he should stay put.

“It probably is best to stay for another year and develop,” Berbatov told BT Sport after Mbappe had become the youngest player to score in a Champions League semi-final during Monaco’s second-leg defeat by Juventus.

“He’s gonna play, if not every game, every other game, he’s gonna have time to shine even more.”

Forming a clinical partnership with Radamel Falcao has proved to be a great learning curve for Mbappe this season and former Monaco midfielder Glenn Hoddle echoed the view that the teenager should focus on playing regular football.

Hoddle said: “Whether he goes or stays he has to play. He's got to play the majority of the games."

Berbatov’s former Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand supported the view that Mbappe should ignore the lure of a move to one of Europe’s bigger clubs this summer.

Ferdinand said: "If he goes to a Real Madrid, Barca, etc, he isn't going to play every game. He'll be a squad player.”
