With a song which first gripped the nation back in 1996 now inspiring the class of 2018, Gareth Southgate's side are being backed for World Cup glory

England are once again daring to belief that “football’s coming home”, with ‘Three Lions’ star Frank Skinner delighted to see his song from 1996 inspiring the class of 2018.

Gareth Southgate’s side headed to Russia this summer free of the expectation which has weighed heavy on past generations.

Having been given the freedom to go out and express themselves, an exciting young side have captured the imagination of a nation starved of success for far too long.

A first World Cup semi-final spot since 1990 is now within their sights, as they prepare to face Sweden in Samara, while a first global crown since 1966 is there to be shot at.

With England taking aim at the grandest of prizes, ‘”It’s coming home” has become the tagline to a remarkable campaign.

‘Three Lions’ is back in the charts, the sun is out and football fever has gripped the country.

Skinner, who formed part of a track originally produced for Euro ’96 alongside comedy partner David Baddiel and the Lightning Seeds, is delighted to be back under the brightest of spotlights.

He is fortunate enough to have witnessed England’s only World Cup triumph to date on home soil 52 years ago and says it is “alright to believe” that all those “years of hurt” could be about to end.

Speaking on his Absolute Radio show, Skinner said: “When I was nine years old, I sat in my living room in a council house in the West Midlands with my dad watching a black and white television. I actually watched England win the World Cup.

“I actually watched it. So it can happen trust me. I am an eyewitness.

“I find myself doing this with qualifiers and all that – you have to say: ‘Oh well, you never know. You know how it is.’

“It’s alright. It’s alright to believe it. We might. We could actually… when we’re doing the show this time next week, we could be looking forward to England being in the World Cup final the next day. Come on!!”
