Italy-Albania suspended after fireworks thrown onto pitch

Italy's World Cup qualifier against Albania was briefly halted after 57 minutes when away fans threw fireworks and smoke bombs onto the pitch in Palermo.

The hosts were leading 1-0 in the Stadio Renzo Barbera thanks to Daniele De Rossi's early goal, with Albania lending a rowdy presence in the stands.

Visiting supporters had been lighting flares throughout the game, but play was finally stopped when the incendiary materials were hurled onto the pitch approaching the hour mark.

After consulting with players referee Slavko Vincic decided to pause the game, taking both teams off the pitch. 

The action was halted for almost 10 minutes while calm was restored, and the World Cup qualifier resumed.

The home side got a second goal from Ciro Immobile to take a 2-0 win in the match, leaving the Italians unbeaten in their qualifying run. 

Italy currently lie second in their group level on points with Spain, while Albania are fourth having taken four points so far.
