Reports have suggested Mohamed Salah could be set to quit the national team, but it is the 62-year-old coach who is the first to walk away

Hector Cuper has left his role as Egypt coach after the country's disappointing World Cup campaign.

The Pharaohs were full of hope heading into the tournament due to the presence of star player Mohamed Salah, but suffered a big blow before the first game when the Liverpool hit-man suffered a shoulder injury in the Champions League final.

Egypt suffered losses to Uruguay, Russia and Saudi Arabia to finish bottom of Group A, but the controversy has only increased since then, with Salah now considering quitting the national team because of the way he was treated in Chechnya.

Instead, it is Cuper who is first to leave in the wake of their underwhelming results.

The 62-year-old's contract was set to expire after the tournament in Russia, but he was expected to enter talks with the Egyptian Football Association over an extension as he insisted he did not want to leave.

However, after a meeting with Cuper, the governing body have opted to let the former Inter and Valencia coach go and have released a statement thanking him for his work.

"We held a meeting after returning from Russia and the entire board decided to say thank you to Cuper and his technical staff," read the statement.

"We appreciate the work from the coach, from reaching the Africa Cup of Nations after three years of absence and taking Egypt to the World Cup after 28 years of absence."

Cuper joined Egypt in 2015 and guided them to second place in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations before sealing their spot at the 2018 World Cup.
