The La Liga-winning manager is pleased with his new signing, one of a trio of attacking acquisitions this summer.
“I believe that with the arrival of Jimenez we cover the characteristics the team required,” said Simeone in an interview with La Sexta published on Thursday. “Jimenez is a young footballer; a quick, box player that we needed,”
He added: “I consider that with (Antione) Griezmann, Raul Garcia, (Mario) Mandzukic and Jimenez we have an important offensive prowess.”
Forwards Diego Costa and David Villa both left the club in the summer, to be replaced by Griezmann, Mandzukic and Jimenez, but the Argentine stressed that the core of last season’s championship-winning team remains the same.
Jimenez arrived in Madrid on Thursday, having left Mexico City on Wednesday night in tears after saying his farewells to family members in the airport.
“(I have) hunger to succeed and make history,” said Jimenez in a video released by the club on Thursday. “I’m very happy to be here.”
The Mexican’s arrival at Atleti has been slightly tainted by the player’s previous tweets that appeared to indicate he is a Real Madrid fan, but Simeone sought to defuse the situation.
“It’s not important,” he said. “I only evaluate Raul Jimenez as a footballer.”
Jimenez could make his official debut next Tuesday, when Atletico Madrid faces Real Madrid in the first leg of La Liga’s Supercopa.
