Luis Enrique undergoes appendix surgery

The 44-year-old was rushed to the hospital Monday but will leave within a few days after successfully undergoing the routine operation.

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has successfully undergone surgery for appendicitis.

The 44-year-old was rushed to the hospital with serious pain Monday before tests confirmed the problem.

A Barcelona statement has revealed that the operation Monday was a success and Enrique is expected to leave the hospital within the next few days.

The former Barca midfielder — who played for the Spanish giant from 1996 to 2004 — was named Gerardo Martino's replacement in May.

Enrique signed a two-year deal after leading Celta Vigo to a ninth-place finish in Spain last season, having previously coached Serie A side Roma and the Blaugrana's B side.
