Barcelona director: Neymar transfer partly behind Rosell resignation

The 49-year-old stepped down as president last month and Susana Monje has admitted the controversy over the Brazilian's move to Camp Nou was one of the factors behind his decision.
Barcelona director Susana Monje has admitted that Neymar's controversial transfer to Camp Nou was one of the reasons behind Sandro Rosell's resignation as club president.

The 49-year-old stood down from his post at the end of January, citing the threat of violence against his family in the wake of revelations of a mystery 40 million euro payment involved in the deal to bring the Brazilian from Santos.

Monje, who is in charge of the club's economic policy, concedes that the fallout from the move contributed to his exit - and is determined not to see a repeat of the "complicated" transfer.

"The Neymar deal was just one of the reasons behind his departure," she admitted to Chilean radio station Cooperativa. "The signing of Neymar was very complicated and hopefully we won't have to go through something like that again."

Meanwhile, Monje has hailed Alexis Sanchez's impact at Barca this season after a disappointing campaign last term.

"He's in fantastic form and is an essential part of the team. He did not have it easy after arriving from Italy as a star and has had to adapt."
