Face off: Madrid fans don Ronaldo masks to support Ballon d'Or bid

Around 45,000 supporters inside Santiago Bernabeu opted for an unusual way to show their backing for the injured Portugal star, who is hoping to land the prestigious accolade.
Real Madrid fans have shown their support for Cristiano Ronaldo's bid for this year's Ballon d'Or by wearing special face masks during Wednesday night's Champions League meeting with Galatasaray.

The Portugal international missed the game with a thigh injury sustained against Almeria at the weekend but his presence was still felt at the Santiago Bernabeu, with approximately 45,000 supporters paying tribute to their talismanic No.7 in rather unusual fashion.

Indeed, Madrid fans donned the Ronaldo masks as part of a show of solidarity with the injured Portugal captain.

The 28-year-old attacker, who has scored a remarkable 25 goals in 18 games this season, is one of the frontrunners for this year's Ballon d'Or, along with current holder Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery.

Madrid needs just a point from its remaining two games against Galatasaray and Copenhagen to secure its place in the next round of the Champions League.
