Nacho thanks Mourinho for Madrid chance

The 23-year-old has lauded his ex-boss for providing him with the platform to showcase his ability and earn a four-year contract extension with the Blancos

Real Madrid youngster Nacho Fernandez has expressed his gratitude to former coach Jose Mourinho for laying the foundations for his career at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 23-year-old recently inked a four-year contract extension with the Blancos having been promoted to the senior squad by the Portuguese last season.

The current Chelsea boss endured a turbulent final year at the Santiago Bernabeu, in which he fell out with a number of players towards the end of his three-year stay in the Spanish capital.

However, the 50-year-old seems to have retained the affections of Nacho who has "only kind words" for the much-maligned trainer.

He told Marca: "I have spent many years fighting to be in the first team and I have finally achieved my dream. Now I must work.

"I have a lot of appreciative and kind words for Mourinho. Thanks to him I have the opportunity to still be here."

The Spain Under-21 international also commented on Zinedine Zidane's transition from sporting director to first team coach.

He added: "He works close with us and communicates well with the players. He is going to bring a lot of experience."
