Bielsa pens one-year extension with Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao has announced that head coach Marcelo Bielsa has signed a new one-year contract extension at the club.

The Argentine trainer led the Basque side to the finals of both the Europa League and the Copa del Rey in 2011-12, and has been applauded for bringing an exciting brand of football to San Mames.

Despite uncertainty being clouded over the 56-year-old’s future, amid reports linking him with the vacant Chelsea post, Bilbao have now confirmed that the Bielsa will stay with the club for another campaign.

“Athletic Club and coach Marcelo Bielsa have agreed to extend the contractual relationship that unite both parties until June 30, 2013,” a short statement on the Primera Division club’s official website reads.

Bilbao ended 10th in La Liga last term after a dip in form towards the end of the season, but will be buoyed on by Bielsa’s show of commitment to the team.
