Sandro Rosell has been elected as the new president of Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.

The former vice president was the clear favorite to take over from Joan Laporta and won by a clear margin taking over 61 per cent of the total membership vote.

The nearest candidate to Rosell in the election race was Agusti Benedito, who surprised many by finishing second but still took less than 15 per cent of the overall poll.

Rosell will officially take over from outgoing president Joan Laporta, who completes his seven year term, on July 1. Rosell becomes the Blaugrana's 39th president in their 110 year history.

"I will be the president of all the members," Rosell said according to Marca.

"The winner of the elections has been Barcelona's members. The high turnout demonstrated the desire the fans have to act and demonstrate their commitment to the club. "

The final voting tally was as follows:

Sandro Rosell: 35,021 votes

Agusti Benedito:
8,044 votes

Marc Ingla: 7,014 votes

Jaume Ferrer:
6,168 votes
