In a post-training press conference today, Sergio Ramos responded to reports by Spanish sports daily Marca claiming that Real Madrid are keen on signing Sevilla winger Jesus Navas next summer.
A product of the Sevilla youth system and later a Sevilla first team player himself, Ramos had high words of praise for his former team-mate and, when asked if Navas was ready to play at a club like Real Madrid, vouched for the mercurial winger. "I believe that he is. He is an incredible player who is showing that he is prepared to play here. He is on the same level as some of the world's best players and would help this team a lot," said the defender in comments also reported by Marca.
Ramos also answered questions that referenced former coach Bernd Schuster's comments claiming that without Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid would be a sleeping pill and that some players in the Madrid squad blocked David Villa's signing for Los Blancos.
With respect to the first issue, Ramos responded with facts. "The numbers are there. We are the team that has scored the most goals. I do not want to enter a war of words and we need to be focused on ourselves to get full points out of our next match against Tenerife."
Finally, asked about his recent change of position from right back to centre-back, and the possiblity that he could play the same central role in this summer's World Cup, Ramos was dismissive. "If there is something I should fear it is that I do not play at all. For any player, the important thing is to be in the starting XI. I am here to play where I am needed."
