Athletic Bilbao 4-1 Tenerife
Bilbao demolished notoriously poor travelers Tenerife at San Mames this afternoon to close the gap on the sides currently in the European spots in La Liga.
The afternoon started badly for the away side, and got progressively worse, Jose Culebras saw red for a late lunge on Gaizka Toquero inside the area, and striker Fernando Llorente made no mistake from the spot to leave Tenerife with a mountain to climb, even at that early stage.
Toquero himself made it two five minutes later, and in the second half a comfortable afternoon for the Basque side was rounded off by further goals from Andoni Iraola and Igor Gabilondo.
Alfaro netted a consolation but the Islanders remain without a win on their travels this season and are firmly in relegation danger.
Malaga 2-1 Espanyol
Malaga's look to have put their poor start to the season behind them, as a confident 2-1 victory in Andalusia this afternoon over Espanyol edges Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz's side further away from the bottom three.
Fernando opened the scoring on 13 minutes, converting a close range header following a pass from Duda, but the away side canceled out his effort thanks to a scrambled equalizer from Victor Ruiz right on half-time.
However, Malaga have improved as the season has developed, and showed their mettle by clinching the win in the second half.
Victor Obinna was the hero, slamming the ball home from inside the six yard box for what proved to be the winning goal, and meaning his side go above Espanyol in the table.
Osasuna 1-1 Valladolid
Osasuna plundered a late equalizer to deny Valladolid all three points and leave honors even in Pamplona.
Pucela, who are currently on a dreadful run of form and are in the relegation zone in the Primera Division, started the brighter of the two sides but it seemed like the match was destined for a goalless stalemate until a frantic last ten minutes.
Haris Medunjanin netted what looked to be the winner for the visitors from some way out, but his side could not hold on, and were broken thanks to an instinctive finish by Javier Camunas, who converted a close range header four minutes from time.
Valladolid remain haunted with a real threat of relegation following this result, while Osasuna leapfrog Villarreal to move back into the top half of the table.
Real Zaragoza 1-3 Sporting Gijon
Real Zaragoza’s recent good run was halted by an excellent away performance by Sporting Gijon at la Romareda.
Manolo Preciado’s men were the more clinical in front of goal on the day, and Mate Bilic gave them a lead to defend before half-time, converting a Lora header across goal with his right foot.
Zaragoza never really looked like getting back into the contest, and their fate was sealed when Sporting made it two, as Luis Moran coolly slotted home a Miguel de las Cuevas through pass.
Javier Arizmendi gave the home side brief hope with a goal in the closing stages, but David Barral ensured that the points were heading back to El Molinon with a clinching goal deep into injury time.
