Tenerife 1-1 Atletico Madrid: Tenerife Miss A Penalty As Atleti Labour On
The result neither side wanted.
Tenerife were held to a draw at home by a struggling Atletico Madrid side who gain just their fifth away point of the season.
After just three minutes the Canarians were in front as Juanlu's far-post cross met Alfaro, who in turn teed up Nino for an easy finish with the Atleti defence sleeping.
Diego Forlan came close at the other end as the Rojiblancos ramped up the pressure, which paid off 21 minutes in. Jose Manuel Jurado did the honors after being set up by Forlan for a strike from the edge of the area.
Manolo Martinez left the pitch injured shortly afterward, but Tenerife still finished the half strongly, with Nino and Alfaro looking dangerous.
Indeed, a handball from Alvaro Dominguez in the box even gave Tenerife a penalty, but Sergio Asenjo saved from Nino's spot-kick.
After the interval Luis Perea very nearly gave away a goal as Tenerife kept up the pace, but in the final twenty minutes Atletico were the stronger side.
Substitute Sinama-Pongolle, in fact, almost set up Forlan for a late winner, but it was not to be.
