Real Madrid's star central defender, Pepe, has undergone successful surgery to repair his torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), an injury suffered in last weekend's Liga match against Valencia, which will keep the Portuguese international out for the rest of the season and possibly sideline him for the World Cup in South Africa.

As reported by Marca, Pepe traveled to his home country of Portugal to have the surgery and according to his surgeon, Dr. Carlos Noronha, "the reconstruction of the ligament was performed with great success and the operation lasted little over an hour in duration".

Pepe now begins the long road to recovery, including physical therapy, to strengthen his knee and return in time to play with Portugal in next summer's showpiece tournament.
