Barcelona Insist Messi's Contract Complies With FIFA & State Law

The statement refutes the claims made earlier this week by a FIFPro representative.

Barcelona have released a statement countering the claim of FIFPro Europe president Philippe Piat, who said that the length of the contract given to Lionel Messi did not comply with FIFA rules. The statement from Camp Nou says that the contract is fully compliant with FIFA and Spanish state law.

"The renewal of [Messi's] contract was conducted in full compliance with state labor law and, of course, under current FIFA rules which state that, under Article 18.2 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, allows term employment contracts exceeding five years if, as this is the case, state law permits," read the statement, according to Sport.

The statement went on to say that Messi's contract "strictly observes the laws and regulations and specifically, the provisions which apply in relation to duration of contract and unilateral termination clause."

The Blaugrana have also stated that they are not aware of any complaint made to FIFA, FIFPro or any other organization in relation to Lionel Messi's contract.

The terms of Messi's contract extension will see him remain at Camp Nou until 2016 with  €250 million required to activate the buy-out clause in his deal.
