Hugo Sanchez: Almeria Must Retain Primera Division Status
The Mexican is optimistic for the new season, but admits that he has set modest targets for his side.
Almeria coach Hugo Sanchez insists that his side's major objective for the coming season is to secure their Primera Division status and steer clear of a potential relegation battle.
Former Real Madrid legend Sanchez took charge of the Andalusian side at Christmas time, replacing Gonzalo Arconada after a run of poor results, and his introduction ultimately guided the club to a comfortable 11th place finish in the La Liga table.
However, Sanchez is realistic with his expectations for the season ahead, and admits safety is his main target.
The Mexican coach told the club's official website, “Our goal will be to stay in the first division, but of course I am ambitious and want something more.
“If we have the support of the fans, we can succeed at the highest level in Spanish football, which next season will be even tougher.”
Sanchez added that he is delighted at the atmosphere surrounding the club in pre-season, and the attitude of the players has given him confidence that an enjoyable season lies ahead.
He concluded, “The club has a good change of environment. In the first week we were testing the physical fitness of the players, and we retired to La Manga, where we recharged our batteries.
“We then go to Wales, and polish our performance before the season.”
