Sergio Aguero: Atletico Hired Abel Resino, Not Me
El Kun has launched another stinging criticism towards his coach following Wednesday night’s botched Champions League comeback attempt against Porto.
In the aftermath of Atletico
The young hot-shot was easily marked out of the second leg clash at FC Porto after being deployed as a lone-striker and immediately after the game during the post-match interviews, he did not shy away from criticizing his coach, Abel Resino’s decision to start usual strike partner, Diego Forlan on the bench.
In an interview with AS yesterday, the Argentine once again highlighted what he believes was a major error in his trainer’s part.
“The coach knows that I prefer to play alongside another forward. Forlan is a player who can decide a game at any moment because of his quality and it also benefits me to play with two other attackers out wide like Maxi and Simao,” he said.
“But as I’ve mentioned before, I do not select the formation. If I did, I would always use the same system every time.
“We have to do what the coach tells us to do. If he tells us he wants to do a series of things on the pitch, we have no choice but to do them. And his order to us at the [Estadio do] Dragao was to go out and play on the counter from the first minute.
“I believe that we could only utilize that strategy in the first half because later in the game, we could no longer keep hold of the ball,” added El Kun.
Aguero then went on to show his support for his countryman and team captain, Maxi Rodriguez, who has also been less than enchanted with Resino in recent weeks after being substituted early in each of the last four games.
“It’s difficult for Maxi, because he is a great player. The most important thing now is that we are behind him,” he assured. “But again, it is the coach who decides who plays and who gets substituted when and we can’t do anything about it.”
Finally, Aguero was asked if he will have a chat with Resino to let the trainer know what playing style he prefers.
“If the coach asks me about it, then I will let him know how I like to play,” he affirmed. “I do not like to cause a fuss because of something trivial but the only thing I can say is that he is the one who selects the formation.
“And he fully has the right to do so because the club brought him in to become the coach. I did not appoint him. I did not say that Abel is the one whom the club must sign. It was the club who hired him,” he stressed.
It has been speculated that Resino benched Forlan against
