Kameni Committed To Espanyol
Espanyol might well have endured a turbulent summer as they lost a few key players near the transfer deadline day, but as goalkeeper Carlos Kameni explains the team is looking forward and not back....
There is no doubt that it was a difficult summer for Espanyol this year as they suffered the loss of both Albert Riera and Pablo Zabaleta close to deadline day. However, with the season underway and six points under their belt from two games it looks as though they have ridden the wave and have settled down very well.
As goalkeeper Carlos Kameni explains the main focus of the team has been to concentrate on the future rather than on the past. He said, " We have started a new campaign, with new companions and a different way of working. The manager has arrived with his ideas and we have to continue to work hard to achieve our goals."
Since joining the club back in 2004 the Cameroonian international has made 122 appearances for Espanyol and whilst he has not yet signed an extension on his current contract, which runs out at the end of this season, he says he wants to keep playing in Catalonia.
"There have been players that have gone and we have had to replace them, at that point my contract was not priority."
"The board of directors know that I am here though and that I am going to continue playing and doing it well with my team-mates," he assured.
Indeed, now entering his fifth season with the club the goalkeeper has become one of Espanyol's best and most recognisable players, although he says, rather modestly, that his good start to the season has been more about luck.
"When a goalkeeper saves it is usually because the forward makes a mistake. If I have the luck to make saves and to give the team points then all the better," he concluded.
