Sven Bender urges Dortmund to get back to basics

Last season's Champions League runners-up have endured an inconsistent first half of the campaign and the 24-year-old has urged his teammates to reproduce their focus of old.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender insists his team is determined to reclaim the second spot in the Bundesliga table.

BVB slipped to fourth following a dreadful run of form prior to the midseason break that saw it win just one of six league matches.

But while catching leader and European champion Bayern Munich – which is already 12 points ahead of Dortmund – looks beyond BVB, Bender says the club has set its sights on second place.

"We will give everything to reclaim second spot," Bender told the club's official website. "We will have to focus again on what has made us a strong team: effective transitional play, aggressive defending, counter-pressing. We will need to be 100 percent physically and have the desire to go, for instance, from 2-0 to 3-0."

Dortmund hosts eighth-place Augsburg in its first Bundesliga match of 2014, to be played Jan. 25.
