Bayern Munich has received some troubling news from the treatment table in the wake of Friday's 3-1 Bundesliga loss to Borussia Monchengladbach.
Following X-ray scans, the club confirmed on its official website that center back Daniel Van Buyten sustained a broken foot during the match, and that he will undergo an operation.
Though club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt refused to make a prognosis on the player's recovery before treatment, it is expected that the 33-year-old will be sidelined for six to eight weeks.
Late in Friday's match, Van Buyten hobbled off in considerable pain and was replaced in defense by Luiz Gustavo.
Bayern declined to comment on whether it would make a move to sign a replacement before the transfer window closes at the end of January.
