Outstanding when stopping shots, but poor when defending from corners. Made a top class save early in the game, and slyly avoided conceding a penalty, but completely flapped at two corners, and was fortunate not to concede from either.
Poor game for the youngster, who probably should have been withdrawn before the final whistle. Allowed Pitroipa to get behind him on numerous occasion, and was beaten by Demel ahead of the goal. Had a chance to redeem himself late, but failed to score on an open net.
Caught out of position for Van Nistelrooy's goal, and rather wasteful in possession. Looks far more comfortable when positioned ahead of the back four.
Beaten once by Elia early in the second half, but put in an otherwise good shift. The game was definitely not lost for Schalke in the centre of defence - it was the wide positions where the hosts were found lacking.
Made a couple of excellent challenges, and was unbeatable in the air. Denied Elia brilliantly in the opening seconds, and later blocked a goal-bound header from Van Nistelrooy.
Made a great clearance off the goal line in the first half, and played fairly well overall, but was replaced as a tactical substitution after Van Nistelrooy's opener.
Accurate in distribution and always fast to the ball. The Croatian midfielder was very active, and positioned himself well defensively. One of the few bright spots among the Schalke ranks.
Distributed the ball well on the counterattack, but was rarely where his team needed him, which was in the penalty area. Absolutely must play in a more forward position if Schalke are to score goals.
Had one good cross early in the game, but was only minimally involved afterward. After 62 minutes in which neither he nor Schalke did much in attack, the Brazilian was replaced by Jurado.
Aggressive and strong in the tackle, but struggled in attack against Aogo, who is one of the few Bundesliga left backs capable of matching his physicality.
Completely failed to properly head a perfect ball on two minutes, which marked the start of a very underwhelming performance. The Dutchman simply is not living up to his potential.
Less involved than Aogo, but was tidy with and without the ball. Did all the hard work to assist Van Nistelrooy's goal.
Booked for a professional foul, but otherwise played an excellent game. Always well positioned, fast to the ball, and dominant both in the air and on the ground.
Cheaply gave the ball away to Farfan early in the game, but played very well thereafter. Won six of his eight challenges, and always looked comfortable with the ball at his feet. Kept Farfan quiet on the wing.
Even as he closes in on his 37th birthday, the Brazilian remains one of the better central midfielders in the Bundesliga. Conceded one free kick, but was otherwise unyielding in defence. As always, was silky smooth in possession, and became a threat on goal as the game stretched late. Nearly had an assist after making a brilliant run to set up Van Nistelrooy in the 70th minute.
Booked for one poor challenge, but was otherwise dominant in the centre of the park. Played the ball with accuracy, but was willing to try the dagger ball, and would have got two assists if not for one save from Neuer and another poor effort from Elia.
Playing out of position in the centre of defence, the Serbian kept Huntelaar under wraps with hard tackling and good tracking. Should have had a goal, but had his header cleared off the line.
Could have done better with his effort on 48 minutes, but dribbled well and showed excellent playmaking instincts, specifically with his through ball to Pitroipa in the 22nd minute. Would have had a higher rating had he not given the ball away so often.
R. van Nistelrooy
Was utterly anonymous throughout the first half, then popped up to net the winner. Was fortunate not to have the goal called back, but it stood nonetheless. Had one or two other chances, but decided the game with his first.
Surprisingly combative for an attacking player, the German-Tunisian dropped back to challenge for the ball, and was very comfortable in possession. Looked like a playmaker only on occasion, though; his carefulness with the ball may have cost Hamburg a potential scoring opportunity or two. To his credit, the youngster put a great effort on goal early in the match, but was denied by Neuer's left foot.
Took a dive when he could just as easily have stayed on his feet and scored. Stunningly fast to the ball, the Burkina-Faso man caused Schmitz all sorts of problems. His economy was disappointing, however.

Replaced Moritz after Van Nistelrooy's goal. Played, surprisingly, in an inside-left wing position, and delivered the ball well from set plays, but was rather isolated.
Replaced Edu for the final half hour and added a bit more creativity than Edu, but still looked sluggish amid a completely uninspired contingent of Schalke players.
Played for just seven minutes in his competitive debut, but was 7/7 in passing, and played a glorious trivela ball. The 17-year old could have a very bright future ahead.
