Schalke coach Felix Magath has admitted that Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic could leave the Gelsenkirchen side in the near future as negotiations about a contract extension have been put on hold.
The 22-year-old's current contract with the Koenigsblauen runs until the summer of 2011 and Schalke have so far been reluctant to meet Rakitic's demands.
"I'm not very optimistic about the contract talks with Ivan Rakitic at the moment," Magath was quoted as saying by Bild.
"We could even decide to cash in on him in the January transfer window. Everything's possible in the world of football and so is a transfer this winter."
Rakitic joined Schalke from Basel in the summer of 2007 and has since made close to 100 official appearances for the Champions League hopefuls.
Clubs such as Juventus, Inter, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid have all been linked with the Croatia international in the past couple of months and Rakitic could very well be on his way out of Schalke this winter following Magath's comments.
