Bundesliga Midweek Round-Up: Mainz Make It Five In A Row

There was also a very convincing win for Hannover against Bremen in the northern derby.
Hoffenheim 1-2 Bayern Munich

A sensational start and a fantastic finish. And Bayern's first goal in over five hours of football in between. That is only a fleeting summary of the entertainment on show at the Rhein Neckar Stadion. Hoffenheim took the lead with the fastest goal of the season after just 37 seconds. Sebastian Rudy, in for Peniel Mlapa, robbed Diego Contento before finding Vedad Ibisevic who struck home past Hans-Joerg Butt via the post.

A mazy run from Franck Ribery, from which the Frenchman sustained a serious looking ankle injury set up Thomas Mueller's second after Daniel Haas pushed away the initial shot on 63 minutes. Then a late strike from Daniel Van Buyten in stoppage time sealed the points for Bayern. Click here to read the full match report.

Hannover 96 4-1 Werder Bremen

Die Roten inflicted a second successive defeat on their northern rivals with a thumping 4-1 victory over Werder Bremen at the AWD-Arena. The home side took the lead through a Clemens Fritz own goal after eight minutes. Despite beating Didier Ya Konan to Emanuel Pogatetz's header, the right-back could only divert the ball past Tim Wiese. Torsten Frings leveled it up after 36 minutes with a penalty after Pogatetz had fouled Sebastian Proedl in the box.

The in-form Ya Konan restored Hannover's lead eight minutes after the break as Hannover capitalized on a Philipp Bargfrede error. Christian Schulz made it three with a thunderous strike into the corner and Norwegian striker Mohammed Abdellaoue put the icing on the cake in stoppage time, firing home after an excellent Sergio Pinto cross.

Mainz 2-0 FC Koeln

Five in a row for the "oh fives"! A headline writer's dream and indeed a scenario beyond the wildest imaginations of the Mainz supporters. They had young sensation Lewis Holtby to thank for his second-half double that broke the back of die Geissboecke. The opener came on 71 minutes when a superb Christian Fuchs cross from the right was headed in at the far post by Holtby. The midfielder, on loan from Schalke 04 then doubled his, and the team's, tally in stoppage time. Again the same combination undid Koeln, with Holtby latching on to a superb long pass from Fuchs before firing past Faryd Mondragon.
