Werder Bremen appeared lost and tired today.
Hoffenheim 4-1 Werder Bremen
A Carlos Eduardo-less Hoffenheim thumped woeful Werder today. The season could not have started better for Bremen, or any worse for their hosts; Torsten Frings netted from the penalty spot after Luiz Gustavo unfortunately handled the ball inside the penalty area. That fortune rapidly expired. Bremen appeared tired, and by the 21st minute, the hosts had equalised through Demba Ba. After Hoffenheim levelled, they dominated the game, and went into the break with a 4-1 lead thanks to late goals from Peniel Mlapa, Vedad Ibisevic, and a picture-perfect free kick from Sejad Salihovic. Their lead essentially put the game out of reach, and the second half was played as an exhibition more than anything else.
Borussia M'gladbach 1-1 Nuernberg
Nuernberg stormed out of the gate with an impressive showing early in the first half. Mehmet Ekici hit the post from 35 yards out, before Jens Hegeler opened the scoring at the 15-minute mark. Gladbach were efficient, however, and new signing Mohamadou Idrissou equalised 16 minutes later. The hosts improved late in the game, but were unable to find a winner and had to settle for a draw.
Hannover 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
Hannover saw little of the ball, and were often pinned down in their own half for the opening 45 minutes. However, Konstantin Rausch's blast from distance opened the scoring on 21 minutes to give the hosts a rather fortunate lead. Benjamin Koehler levelled six minutes later, but Hannover managed to enter half-time on level terms. After the break, the hosts were much better as Didier Ya Konan fired in a late winner.
Koeln 1-3 Kaiserslautern
Koeln had to play with 10 men for 88 minutes after Youssef Mohamad was sent off for a reckless challenge. Nonetheless, the hosts took the lead six minutes later as Milivoje Novakovic took advantage of a goalkeeping error. It took the majority of the game for Kaiserslautern's numerical advantage to take effect, but eventually, Srdjan Lakic fired in a glorious equaliser from 25 yards. Lakic gave 'Lautern the lead six minutes from full time, before Ivo Ilicevic netted a late third.
Freiburg 1-3 St. Pauli
St. Pauli were the better team today, but would have left the pitch without a point if not for a magnificent performance at the death. After 78 scoreless minutes, Papiss Demba Cisse seemed to have won the game for Freiburg, but the promoted visitors fought back. Fabian Boll equalised in the 83rd minute, before substitutes Richard Sukuta-Pasu and Fin Bartels netted in rapid succession to round off a 3-1 victory for the visitors.
