With Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic reportedly attracting the attention of German international trainer Joachim Löw, the youngster has been told he will not be allowed to represent Germany.
The 19 year old Dortmund centre back has been informed by Fifa that he has no right to play for the ‘Nationalmannschaft’ due to the fact that he has already represented the USA at youth level back in 2005.
He can now only play for a country, whose nationality he held at the time, which means either the US or Serbia. Any chance of citizenship would not change this.
BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke informed Bild that the club and the player had both learned of the news.
“The topic of the German national team has been removed. I’m still young and want to get a full season in the Bundesliga behind me” Subotic explained.
“Nobody needs to talk to me about international football before the summer of 2009” he added.
However, we are sure to see quite a struggle between the Americans and Serbia as they try to secure the services of the talented defender.
