thumbnail Hello,

The Morocco International defender has attracted a lot of praise following the Giallorossi's excellent start to the season but insists he can still do better.

Roma defender Mehdi Benatia has attracted praise following his excellent performances this season, but the center back insists he can still improve.

The French born defender, who joined the Giallorossi this summer from Udinese, has become a key player for Rudi Garcia’s side this season, being part of a defense that has conceded just seven goals in 17 Serie A games so far, and contributing four goals at the other end.

Despite his excellent performances this season, Benatia played down talk that he has emerged as the best defender in Italy.

“I don’t consider myself the best defender in Italy. I am just trying to do the best I possibly can in a high quality team where it is easy to develop my game,” he told L’Equipe. “The fact that I scored four goals has generated a lot of talk."

Eyebrows were raised in the summer as Roma parted with a reported 13.5 million euro for his services, only three years after he was playing his football in Ligue 2 with Clermont Foot.

The 26-year-old also suffered from injury problems early in his career, and he believes that his modest football background and past injuries have enabled him to enjoy this season even more.

“I have struggled a lot during my career with injury and with people who did not trust me," he said. "That means I really appreciate the success I am having at the moment.

“The most important thing for me is that the coach knows he can count on me.”

Benatia will be hoping his side can record another clean sheet Sunday evening as it faces Juventus at Juventus Stadium in a crucial top-of-the-table clash.
