The Argentine legend, who is currently coaching in United Arab Emirates, has revealed that the club he inspired to the Scudetto in 1987 retains a special place in his heart
The former Argentina international inspired the Partenopei to a thrilling Scudetto triumph in 1987 and revealed that he remembers the celebrations which followed like they were "only yesterday".
"I am still in love with Naples and the Napoli jersey," Maradona told Il Mattino. "And what I wish for all the fans is that they will soon be celebrating another title. [The 1987 championship win] seems like only yesterday. It was a unique emotion and my heart is there now, where, in every corner of the city, they will be recalling that first Scudetto.
"I cried only a few times on a football field but that day was a day like no other.
He went on to compare the team's achievement to his time with the Argentina national team, which was hugely successful with him leading the way.
"Along with the World Cup I won with Argentina in Mexico, it is the highlight of my career," he said. "But only on that day was I able to celebrate at home with all my people. In Mexico City, my people were far away. I remember everything from that year: the victories over Brescia, Roma, Milan and Fiorentina - all of them.
"The final game at the San Paolo, the night while on retreat in [team masseur Salvatore] Carmando's room watching TV and talking among ourselves.
He of course remembers the celebrations following the success as well.
"The party after was beautiful; it lasted for days," he added. "I never understood why it took Napoli 60 years to win a championship. They had, and continue to have, fantastic support. And I remember the enthusiasm for the league title; the fans, the banners. So I embrace the whole of Naples for the emotions that it has given me. My heart is with them now. Just as it was then."
Maradona, who joined Napoli from Barcelona in 1984, helped the club win another Scudetto in 1990 before departing the San Paolo the following year.
