New Roma owner Thomas DiBenedetto has revealed that he appreciates England general manager Franco Baldini, putting the future of caretaker-manager Vincenzo Montella under doubt.

The American tycoon is the head of a consortium set to take over the Italian club and met Fabio Capello’s key personnel in Tuscany on Friday. Baldini is a former director of football at Roma and along with England head coach Capello is due to leave his post after the end of the Euro 2012 finals. Montella replaced Claudio Ranieri as the Lupi tactician in February this year.

“I didn’t know Franco Baldini,” DiBenedetto is quoted as saying by ANSA news agency. “He is someone who really knows his football. So I like him a lot.”

This comes just a day after the 61-year-old hinted that Montella could be given a permanent contract at the end of the current season, stating: “Vincenzo Montella is doing a great job.

"The situation was very difficult and it’s clear he has a great rapport with the players. He managed to remove that black cloud that was holding the team down.”

Roma are sixth in the Serie A table at the moment, six points off the final Champions League slot.
