As Palermo fell to their third consecutive defeat in all competitions, coach Delio Rossi praised his men for an improved performance as they pulled out all the stops despite going down 1-0 to Lazio.

“We played a great game against the top side in the league,” he declared to SkySport shortly after the game. “I can take nothing away from my side for the manner in which they expressed themselves today.

“Credit must be paid to the visitors [Lazio], who found the back of the net on their first opportunity and then held on with some solid defending at the back.

“I have a young side at my disposal and I think we still need to learn a few things. We controlled the game for large spells but when you don’t reap what you have sown often in football the opposition will punish you.

“In comparison to the defeat against Udinese I am very happy with the performance today. We left the field with little to show for but there is a lot to build on given the manner in which we pushed right until the death.”
