Serie A Team Of The Week: Round 23
Goal.com looks at the best performing players from the twenty-third round of the Serie A calendar.
By Adam Scime
BEST XI
Formation: 4-4-2
Goalkeeper
Julio Sergio (Roma): It was a close contest between the Roma goalkeeper and Bologna’s Roberto Colombo for this post, but the Brazilian just edges his counterpart. He made stop after stop, notably on Alberto Gilardino and Juan Vargas, against the Viola as the pressure poured in and was the main protagonist as Claudio Ranieri’s side kept up their positive streak. To think at the beginning of the season he was third choice!
Defence
Maicon (Inter): The defender was at his best as he whizzed down the right and was a danger man all match long against Cagliari with his darting runs and curling crosses. He assisted the second goal from the corner flag and linked up well with those in front of him.
Dario Dainelli (Genoa): Since his move from Fiorentina, the Grifoni defender has found himself in our worst XI a couple times, but he turned things around with an attentive performance against Chievo Verona, helping his team keep a clean sheet for a 1-0 win at the Marassi.
Simon Kjaer (Palermo): The young Dane was imperious at the back once again for the Rosanero against Parma, limiting the Gialloblu strikers, and will no doubt be a star at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.
Giampaolo Bellini (Atalanta): Not many players have been able to stop Bari winger Edgar Alvarez this season, but the left-back was on song all afternoon and proved to be insurmountable his opponent. The epitome of confidence.
Midfield
Marco Rossi (Genoa): The winger has always exhibited plenty of enthusiasm, but this weekend he also displayed great technique to convert the winner with a low strike on the turn. His influence is growing under coach Gian Piero Gasperini in 2009-10.
Javier Zanetti (Inter): The ageless Nerazzurri captain began the match with one of his trademark mazy runs, bursting past Lazzari and running half the pitch to set up the first goal. From then on he was a force in midfield, recovering possession and running the ball out of dangerous situations.
Fabio Simplicio (Palermo): The 30-year-old was only on the field for the last ten minutes of the match, but what an impact! Having been touted to leave at the end of the transfer window, the midfielder showed his still loves the club’s shirt by firing in the winner against his former team Parma and then bursting into tears!
Jaime Valdes (Atalanta): Excellent against Bari, the player dictated the pace of the game from midfield and set up his team-mates on a number of occasions, even if they could not take advantage. The Chilean will be boosted by this performance.
Attack
Antonio Di Natale (Udinese): The Zebrette had been struggling lately, but the striker took his team by the scruff of the neck to end Napoli’s unbeaten run under coach Walter Mazzarri. A truly decisive showing, as he finished off his hat-trick with two goals in injury time to win the match and lift himself back into sole position at the top of the Capocannoniere standings. Simply unstoppable on the day even when his penalty was blocked, he put the rebound back into the net.
Goran Pandev (Inter): Coach Jose Mourinho described his performance as ‘stratospheric’ and the Macedonian certainly was in form at the San Siro against Cagliari. He was active for the full ninety, striking after six minutes for the first goal and also setting up the third for the Nerazzurri.
