Inter defender Cristian Chivu has undergone surgery at a hospital in Verona having suffered a fractured skull while representing the Nerazzurri earlier today.

The Romanian international suffered the injury during a clash of heads with Chievo striker Sergio Pellissier.

Neurosurgeon, Sergio Turazza is quoted in La Gazzetta Dello Sport as saying “[Chivu] has suffered a head injury in the right parietal region,” that “has caused fractures of the skull with potholes inwards and bleeding, and a small hematoma.”

Turazza went on to explain that the surgery was “necessary mainly because of the presence of hematoma and to raise the sunken bone fragments,” so "that the hematoma will not reform.”

While Chivu’s injuries are extremely serious, the neurosurgeon went on to explain that he is confident the defender will make a full recovery.

“The walls to the brain appeared undamaged, the skull has been reconstructed with the bone of the patient and regained a normal profile. Everything has been carried out and we're pretty confident so the patient can heal without any problems.”
