Sampdoria president Giuseppe Marotta has labelled star forward Antonio Cassano the next Paolo Rossi in the Italian game.

Cassano aided the Bluecerchiati to a 2-1 win over Chievo, and even though he did not score, he played a major part team-mate Giampaolo Pazzini's goal, providing the assist.

"He wanted a goal at all cost," Marotta told Sampdorianews.net post-match. "And was a little bitter.

"Bit I think he put in a great performance today.

"As for his wedding date? I hope he hasn't put aside his dream of playing in the World Cup next year, as there are still lots of matches to go.

"[Italian national team coach Marcello] Lippi has made some choices, but there is still time to change his mind.

"There is a possibility for a late call-up, like that of Paolo Rossi in the 1982 tournament," the Sampdoria president added.

Rossi went to become a household name in Italy, as well as a World Cup Legend, for his exploits helping the Azzurri loft their third Jules Remy trophy. He won the Golden Ball for being the tournament's highest scorer, and claimed the Ballon d'Or in the same year.
