Lippi: De Rossi Wanted To Play For Italy Despite Surgery
The Roman is keen to represent the Azzurri, despite his latest setback.
Roma’s Daniele De Rossi suffered an elbow to the face by Inter’s Patrick Vieira, when the two sides met at the weekend. The blow has resulted in the midfielder having to undergo the knife to repair the damage done to his face, ruling him out of action for a fortnight.
With this in mind, the 26-year-old has been forced out of Italy’s squad for their upcoming friendly matches against the Netherlands and Sweden, and he has been replaced by Fiorentina’s Riccardo Montolivo.
Despite this, the Azzurri coach, Marcello Lippi, has revealed that the Giallorossi star still wants to play for his country, but won’t be able to, as the doctors have stated otherwise.
“Daniele wants to be there,” Lippi affirmed in an interview with Romagiallorossa.com.
“He was ready to play with a mask on, but the surgeon who operated him advised him not to, so unfortunately he will have to miss out.”
Lippi also offered a brief word of advice for those who were not selected in the squad this time around, including Liverpool’s Andrea Dossena and Inter’s Davide Santon.
He added, “This does not mean that you have failed.”
