Sampdoria 4-1 Bologna: Rossoblu Sample Blucerchiati's Magical Calcio

Sampdoria blitzed their way to the top of Serie A as they destroyed Bologna who were reduced to ten men after just 27 minutes. Giampaolo Pazzini gave his side the lead early on before three goals in 15 first half minutes from Daniele Mannini, who scored twice, and Reto Ziegler, who got his first of the campaign, put the game beyond doubt.
It was a top versus bottom of the table battle at Marassi. Sampdoria headed into the game with the chance to go above first-placed Inter in the standings, while the away side began with a new coach as Franco Colomba took his first match in charge after replacing Giuseppe Papadopulo in midweek.
It was 'Doria who kicked off, but the visitors put the pressure on from the start, not that it lasted. Francesco Valiani's corner after a minute of play found Marcelo Zalayeta, he did well to connect with the ball in a crowded area, but sent his volley over the crossbar.
Bologna continued to enjoy the brighter start. Samp's back pairing of Stefano Lucchini and Marco Rossi looked shaky and it allowed Luca Vigiani to pick out Di Vaio perfectly with a great through pass. The hitman, well known to Sampdoria from his time at Genoa, ran through unmarked, and it was only thanks to some quick-thinking from goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi that saved his defenders any blushes.
Despite the good start, evidence of the Rossoblu's relegation struggle was there for all to see. Antonio Cassano did brilliantly to control Angelo Palombo's cross-field ball and skip past Salvatore Lanna on the right. He darted towards the box and fed Pazzini. The hitman, wearing a face mask to protect his broken nose, stabbed the ball past Emiliano Viviano from close range, showing that he still has the sniff for a goal regardless of his injury.
The visitors were in no mood to scale-back their attacking threat. Vigiani picked out Di Vaio and, once again, he had the better of Rossi, but failed to put his header in the back of the net as he sent the ball just wide of the left post.
Those fans who paid the ticket to get in were treated to a contender for goal of the season as 'Doria brought out the party tricks and doubled their lead. Pazzini received the ball from Cassano, he chested it and saw Mannini's run to his right. 'Pazzo' knocked the ball up and over to his team-mate first-time, and he smashed it into the near post with an unstoppable volley. It was Mannini's fourth goal of the campaign and, worryingly for Bologna, their hopes of getting anything from the game were dampened.
Colomba's defense crumbled as the Genoa-based outfit continued to create with conflict. Luigi Del Neri's side had several chances in quick succession after the second goal, but failed to add to their tally as the dominance persisted.
It was soon 3-0 as Ziegler scored his first of the campaign. Mannini turned provider this time as he fed the midfielder. He turned Gaby Mudingayi and fizzed his left-foot strike into the bottom corner.
Though there were still 74 minutes left on the clock, it was game over. Di Vaio received a second yellow for taking his protests with Massimiliano Saccani too far. The striker had been booked earlier for a hand ball. It was painful watching for Rossoblu president Francesca Menarini who traveled 191 kilometers to see her side. She took comfort by puffing on a cigarette in the stands.
The game threatened to turn into a rout. It was 4-0 with just 32 minutes played. Cassano showed just why Lippi needs to think twice about taking him to the World Cup. His mazy run and hold up play had Daniele Portanova, Miguel Britos and Roberto Guana baffled. He sucked them into his vacuum trap before dispatching a sublime cross to the back post where Mannini was waiting to nod home into an unguarded net. While it was the midfielder who scored, the goal had 'Il Talentino's' hallmark stamped on it.
Bologna's body language as they came out for the restart said it all. They were deflated as the home side came out with a swagger and held their tails up to the cheers of the crowd.
With the game in the bag, Del Neri's side sat back and allowed their opponents to play. Colomba's men enjoyed the odd spell of possession, but didn't create any chances worthy of mention as damage limitation was the order from the bench.
Pablo Osvaldo replaced Zalayeta, and he scored with his first touch to restore an element of pride. Lucchini, who was wobbly on the night, failed to deal with a loose ball in the box, and the hitman pounced knocking it into an unguarded net. Unlike Pazzini's face gear, the goal didn't mask the smell of three points.
The result sees 'Doria go top temporarily depending on how Inter get on in their game at the Giuseppe Meazza.
