Player Ratings: Juventus 1-0 Chievo
Juventus defeated Chievo at the Stadio Olimpico this evening on the opening round of the new Serie A season. Goal.com rates the players on show.
JUVENTUS
Buffon - 6.5: Did not have a single save of note to make all game, but was commanding of his area.
Grygera - 6.5: Early mistake almost let in Pellissier, but performed a crucial tackle on 55 minutes to deny a certain Chievo goal. Still looks a weak link though.
Cannavaro - 8.5: Produced a master-class in defending tonight. Made at least five brilliant challenges, and marshaled the backline superbly. A great signing.
Chiellini - 7.5: Aside from one occasion when he was slipped by Pellissier, Chiellini forged a strong partnership with Cannavaro.
Salihamidzic - 6.5: Solid and enterprising down the left-hand side in the first half, but he was forced off with injury at half time.
Tiago - 6: Neat and tidy in the first half, spraying the ball around. Anonymous after the break, Juve improved again after he was hooked for Marrone.
Marchisio - 6.5: Showed good energy in midfield, covering the pitch and working up and down.
Poulsen - 6: Looked like a new player in the first 25 minutes, but then went back to being the Poulsen of last season. Slow and sloppy in possession.
Diego - 7: Juventus' much-needed creative force and it was a positive debut. Assisted Iaquinta's winner, and also set-up the chance for Amauri when he hit the post.
Iaquinta - 7.5: Led the line and scored the winner with an unstoppable header. Almost grabbed a second but was denied by Sorrentino.
Amauri - 7: Superb in the first half, setting up a great chance for Iaquinta, but a little quieter after the interval, even if he did hit the post.
Subs
De Ceglie - 6.5: Did his defensive job, but his crosses were Cristian Molinaro-like.
Marrone - 6.5: Showed promise
Camoranesi - N/A
CHIEVO
Sorrentino - 7: Was blameless on Iaquinta's goal, but performed a heroic stop on the same striker to keep Chievo in the game.
Frey - 6: Struggled in the early stages, but then recovered to put in a shift at right back.
Morero - 5: A very poor first half where he was out-jumped by Iaquinta for the goal and skinned by Amauri for Iaquinta's other chance.
Yepes - 7: Easily the best of the Chievo backline. He may be 33, but he could probably be playing at a higher level.
Mantovani - 6: Did a job down the left hand side, and did not disgrace himself.
Luciano - 6.5: Showed good intent on the right wing, and whipped in a number of dangerous crosses. Involved in a comical moment when he stole the ball out of Buffon's hands illegally.
Rigoni - 6.5: Very positive showing from the former Vicenza man. Took control of the midfield for a spell in the second half.
Marcolini - 6.5: Dogged display in the middle-of-the-park, but he tired after the hour mark and was substituted.
Pinzi - 7: Arguably Chievo's best player tonight. The former Udinese man cut through the likes of Poulsen and Tiago in the second period.
Pellissier - 6.5: Always looked dangerous without ever really hurting the Juventus defense. Should have another good season.
Bogdani - 5: While his strike partner always had a trick up his sleeve, Albanian hitman Bogdani made little to no contribution.
Subs
Bentivoglio - 6.5: Some nice touches and passes.
Granoche - 6: Never really got into the game
