Report: Sergio Ramos Tops Milan's Maldini Replacement List

Paolo Maldini's inevitable retirement at the end of the season has sparked a list of potential transfer targets that could attempt to fill the captain’s boots.

It will be a sad day for Calcio when one of the true greats steps down for good. Milan and Serie A's elder statesman Paolo Maldini looks sure to retire at the end of this season, at the ripe old age of 41.

The former Azzurri captain has been a one-club man all of his career, and his retirement will be difficult to deal with for many people in the Rossonero family who are used to seeing 'il Capitano' on a daily basis.

The club are looking ahead to the future, however, and it seems that they have already drawn up a list of candidates that could fill the void left by the legendary defender after his departure.

Reports in the peninsula suggest that Milan have eight names on that transfer list, including a number of top class stoppers. The main candidate is considered to be Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos, while Fluminense's Thiago Silva, Bayern Munich's Breno, Bayer Leverkusen's Vidal and Sao Paulo's Miranda are all highly regarded and therefore highly sought after by the Rossoneri.

Reports also make mention of Udinese's Cristian Zapata, Dynamo Kyiv's Taras Mykhalyk and Liverpool's Daniel Agger as other candidates that may be of interest should the Milan giants be unable to land the others on their list.
