Ferguson spent a trophy-laden 27 years in charge at Old Trafford and ended his coaching career to become a director and club ambassador at the club. His successor, David Moyes, lasted just 10 months in the job as United finished seventh in the Premier League last season - its lowest in the competition's history.
Van Gaal says he was scheduled to meet the 72-year-old during the club's preseason tour in the United States but has yet to speak to him since the meeting was canceled.
"No, until this moment I have not found the time to [meet with Ferguson], but I do not know if he is at home," Van Gaal told reporters. "It was in the planning that I would see him in the US but he called off and I have also been very busy with a lot of things."
Manchester United begins the new season with a home fixture against Swansea City on Saturday.
