Everton fullback Leighton Baines says Manchester City players “couldn’t believe” Gareth Barry had been allowed to leave the club on deadline day.
The midfielder completed a season-long loan to Goodison Park day and put in an impressive debut as the Toffees beat Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday. Baines is a big admirer of the former Aston Villa man and feels he will prove to be a big asset for Roberto Martinez’s side.
"I've known Gareth through the England set-up, and I've always rated him really highly," Baines told Everton’s official website. "The City lads on the last international break were saying that they can't believe that they haven't kept him and he doesn't play for them.
"That says enough about his worth for any team he plays in.”
Barry caught the eye against Jose Mourinho’s men with a superb block to deny Samuel Eto’o what looked a certain goal after a mistake by Tim Howard, and Baines was impressed with his debut.
"Everyone rates him who he plays with and he has come in and shown what a great asset he is going to be for us,” Baines said. "We've seen straight away what he can give to the team.
"I'm sure Gareth will tell you that he has not played as much as he would have liked, and he has already produced a performance like that.
"If he plays like that most weeks, he is going to add to the team."
