Villas-Boas happy with new Tottenham signings

Roberto Soldado netted a penalty on his debut to secure three points, while midfielders Paulinho and Etienne Capoue also impressed against newly-promoted Crystal Palace.

Andre Villas-Boas praised the impact of his new recruits after Tottenham got its season underway with a win at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Record signing Roberto Soldado capped his debut with the only goal of the game to seal all three points against the newly promoted club.

The Spain international converted a second-half penalty after Dean Moxey handled an Aaron Lennon cross, and while the Tottenham boss was impressed with his new striker, his side's overall showing pleased him most.

"(It was) a good performance," Villas-Boas said. "There's always a surprise factor to Palace because of the amount of signings that they have brought (in) and the fact that we don't know them as well as the other teams so I'm extremely happy with the performance.

"We had good chances during the whole of the 90 minutes, chances to put the game to bed when we were 1-0 up, so I can only be pleased with the performance. Overall we were the deserved winners."

Soldado was one of three debutantes given starts by Villas-Boas and the 35-year-old was impressed with the way the players have adapted to life in England.

"Most of them arrived at a later stage (of preseason), particularly Soldado and Paulinho," he added. "We can only see them develop towards the future.

"Bearing in mind for all of them the Premier League is a different proposition in terms of intensity and passion I think they did extremely well."

One player Villas-Boas was not keen to discuss was Gareth Bale, the Portuguese making it perfectly clear that the Welshman - who is said to be keen on a move to Real Madrid - was not up for debate.

"I'm not going to comment about the player (Bale)," he insisted. "He is injured and not available for selection and is not likely to start the Tbilisi or Swansea games."
