Asprilla enjoyed two spells at the Magpies after joining from Parma in 1996 and has revealed he is set take up his new role in March.
The 43-year-old also confirmed he hopes to help the club pick up the best talent from his native Colombia.
He told Radio Antena 2: “Some teams in England are going after the Spaniards, so I want Newcastle to fix their eyes on Colombian talent.”
Newcastle is currently enjoying an excellent run of form which has seen it win four of its last five matches and seal a place in the last 16 of the Europa League.
